SUMMARY:

This dissertation presents a study on the use of cell phones in the classroom as a
potential pedagogical resource, aiming to investigate whether this tool can contribute
to the development of high school students in the state public school system.
Teacher training and data collection were carried out at the Escola Estadual de
Ensino Técnico Senador Ernesto Dornelles, located in the downtown area of Porto
Alegre, which offers both high school and technical education. The methodology
employed in the research has a qualitative approach regarding its results and an
experimental approach regarding its objectives. It is theoretical in terms of technical
procedures and makes use of a literature review. The study was conducted through
the application of two ways of delivering the same content to two groups. Initially, one
group received the content with the aid of cell phones as a pedagogical tool, while
the other group received the content without it. Subsequently, a different content was
taught, reversing the method: the group that had used the cell phone now received
the content without it, and the group that had not used it initially now made use of it.
After the contents were covered, the students underwent an evaluation, and teachers
recorded their grades, enabling us to analyze in which context the students
performed better. This analysis aimed to determine whether the use of cell phones
made any difference in stimulating and developing learning. The choice of this
research topic arose from the observation that, for many years, education maintained
a stable pattern with few innovations and the use of very traditional didactic
resources, such as books and notebooks only. This approach lasted for generations;
however, the advent of the technological revolution has forced us to rethink teaching
practices. For this transformation to be possible, it is necessary to provide teacher
training for the use of technology as well as for new educational practices. Preferably,
this training should occur during working hours and be accessible, so that teachers
can consult the training materials whenever necessary. To make this feasible, an
on-line training program was created and made available on a free-access platform.
The research begins at the same time that the use of cell phones in schools for
children and adolescents is being reconsidered, discussing the law that prohibits the
use of cell phones in schools and clarifying that their use is permitted only for
pedagogical purposes. The development of this topic was based on the belief that
more than simply prohibiting, it is necessary to re-educate students about the
usefulness of this tool beyond entertainment.
