SUMMARY:

Academic entrepreneurship faces several cultural, institutional, and legal barriers that limit researchers’ ability to fully explore the innovative potential of their discoveries. Combining academic and entrepreneurial careers is a challenging endeavor, marked by a lack of business experience, the need to balance research and market demands, and the need to adapt to a business culture that differs significantly from the university environment. Many researchers are motivated to apply their work in the real world and gain recognition, but the lack of institutional support, limited knowledge about technology transfer, and absence of entrepreneurial training hinder the commercial exploitation of innovations generated within universities. In this context, business acceleration programs such as Hangar, from PUCRS, emerge as a response to these challenges. Created to support researchers in transforming their scientific work into ventures, Hangar offers mentorship, resources, and market connections, facilitating the integration between academia and the productive sector. Additionally, it prepares master’s and doctoral students for the challenges of the business environment and the development of sustainable business models. Since its inception, Hangar has supported the creation of startups in areas such as technology, health, education, and sustainability, fostering an environment that bridges academic knowledge and entrepreneurial practice. The objective of this work is to produce a technical report, based on documentary analysis of the program's editions and interviews, to understand how policies and practices that encourage entrepreneurship, promoted within graduate programs, can stimulate the creation of ventures based on scientific and technological research.
