AISI 8640 Steel Crane Pins: Strength, Heat Treatments, and Monitoring

The 8640 steel is widely used in critical crane components due to its high strength and durability. However, challenges such as premature wear and fatigue failures, especially in critical interface regions between the lifting arm and the tilting arm, continue to compromise operational efficiency. This review article compiles advancements in the application of 8640 steel in crane connection pins, focusing on mechanical properties, heat treatments, and IoT-based monitoring strategies. The analysis included studies on heat treatments (quenching, tempering, and boronizing), fatigue testing, specialized lubrication, and finite element modeling. The goal is to adopt the solutions and techniques tested in these studies, emphasizing those that have demonstrated consistent results. When combined, these methodologies have proven effective in enhancing component durability, contributing to failure prevention and extending the service life of parts under severe operating conditions. Furthermore, the implementation of a monitoring system enables the early detection of anomalies, increasing operational safety. Thus, this article provides a practical contribution by reviewing and consolidating advancements in the manufacturing of high-strength components, aligning with the durability objectives of the pin addressed in this study.
