SUMMARY:

The migration process has been going on for years in the human species due to the precarious living conditions in which many migrants find themselves and is increasing considerably in Brazil. This factor corroborates the reasons why these individuals seek a better quality of life (Busko, 2017). Cavinato, Gallina and Frezza (2021) explain that these immigrants have had difficulty speaking Portuguese in a variety of contexts. Balzan et al. (2023) point out the need to develop and make available teaching materials that promote and facilitate communication among immigrants. Based on this scenario, this research proposes to investigate and describe how interactions between parental figures and the school community occur in a school located in Serra Gaúcha in order to use this analysis to develop teaching materials for Portuguese as a Welcoming Language (PLAc). The theoretical-analytical perspective that will support the analysis of the interactions is that of Conversation Analysis based on ethnomethodology (Sack; Schegloff; Jefferson, 1974), which will be illuminated by the translingual approach (García; Wei, 2014) and the perspective of interculturality (Walsh, 2007). The interactions come from naturalistic data and will be recorded in audio and video at a municipal elementary school located in Serra Gaúcha. The data consist of teachers and school management between the school environment and parental figures at moments involving enrollment and delivery of report cards in this context. This research, which is ongoing, is part of a larger project coordinated by Professor Minéia Frezza called “Brazilian Portuguese spoken in Serra Gaúcha as a welcoming language for immigrants”. With this project, we intend to develop teaching material that welcomes immigrants and refugees, promoting improvements in communication between parental figures and the school in Basic Education.
